CCA Sapelo Annual Banquet & Auction @ Sapelo Saltwater Fishing Club
Aug 27 @ 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Sustainable Skidaway
Nov 14 @ 7:00 pm – 8:45 pm

Sustainable Skidaway

.. will be the topic of Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) of Skidaway’s November meeting and seminar on Monday, November 14, at St. Peter’s Church beginning at 7 p.m.

What is Sustainable Skidaway, what are the benefits of The Landings being designated as a Certified Sustainable Community, and how close are we to accomplishing this goal are among the questions that will be answered in a presentation by Sustainable Skidaway leadership.

Sustainable Skidaway is a collaboration of volunteers, residents, and island staff working toward recognition of our community’s achievements in economic, social, and environmental stewardship. The organization’s objective is to have The Landings designated as a Certified Sustainable Community – the first in Georgia – in a program under the auspices of Audubon International.

CCA members will hear about what has been accomplished so far and what is in the works. Projects of CCA that are being reported on for certification also will be noted. In addition, seminar presenters will ask for members’ participation in nominating residents in the I am Sustainable Skidaway campaign where we recognize those who have benefited the community with their work in economic, social, or environmental stewardship.

The certification project, initiated by Skidaway Audubon in 2013, enjoys widespread support from The Landings Association, with many staff members now engaged in building out the long-term sustainability plan required for certification. This plan has goals that range from five to 10 to 20 years, so even our youngest residents will benefit from this planning. Attendees will have an opportunity to see how we are building on the sustainable efforts of the past and have a look into the future.

One attendee at the meeting will receive a complimentary Home Energy Audit funded by Sustainable Skidaway, valued at up to $500, in a raffle to benefit CCA activities. Green Renewables, founded in 2009, will conduct the audit. This is the same company that completed recent energy audits of The Landings Association’s buildings ( and will be auditing The Landings Club’s operations office.

CCA is a nonprofit organization with chapters on the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf Coasts. For more information about CCA of Skidaway, call Joe Tyson (598-8765). Karen Grainey – Clean Coast Georgia @ St. Peters Church
Jun 12 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Volunteers working for Litter-Free Beaches will be featured at the CCA of Skidaway’s June meeting and seminar to be held on Monday, June 12, at St. Peter’s Church beginning at 7:00 pm.  Karen Grainey, President of Clean Coast, will share the facts about the far-reaching effects that plastic debris, the man-made blight, is having on our coastal waters.

Ubiquitous marine debris washes up on even the most remote beaches of the world, and Georgia’s extensive salt marshes and uninhabited barrier islands are no exception.  Clean Coast is a volunteer-run non-profit which organizes clean-ups on the Georgia coast, ferrying volunteers to some of these remote locations to remove the unsightly and unhealthy waste.  Clean Coast is dedicated to this effort not only because the trash is ugly, but also because it is deadly to the wildlife that ingests debris or becomes entangled.  More is also being discovered about how our plastic discards are potentially harmful even to us humans.

Clean Coast has been active for over twenty-five years and has collected tons of trash from area beaches and marshes.  It is estimated that Clean Coast volunteers pick up an average 800 to 1,000 lbs. of trash per clean-up, scheduling at least one outing each month.  Members and non-members are all invited to participate.  See the group’s web site for more information.

Wilderness Southeast reports that Karen Grainey has worked tirelessly to keep Georgia’s beaches, marshes, and waterways clean, both of trash and less visible pollution.  A Georgia Master Naturalist, she leads groups to delightful discoveries while paddling or motoring through the wondrous wetlands of coastal Georgia.  An active volunteer with Georgia Adopt-A-Stream and Clean Coast, serving as president off and on since 2000, plus several advocacy organizations, Karen and husband Philip received the 2002 statewide Environmental Education Award for Extraordinary Volunteer Watershed Effort.  Her enthusiasm and passion to explore are contagious, and she enjoys sharing her knowledge of and concern for our unique coastal habitats.

The CCA’s June raffle prize will be a 4-hour trip on Captain Jack McGowan’s fishing boat.
